Anthracite filter media is carefully selected from anthracite coals with the highest carbon content. It is then hydraulically graded to minimize minerals and ash, and finally screened and washed to ensure suitability for filtration purposes.

Anthracite filters are often used as secondary fill and as a component of multi-media filters. Anthracite filter media is a durable media with a long service life and a wide temperature range. It does not contain silica and will not interfere with the production of ultrapure water. Anthracite provides higher service flows and longer filtration runs while reducing head loss compared to single media filter beds. Backwash rates are also reduced. Low uniformity coefficient anthracite filter media extends filter life without the need for media changes. Service flows are higher and filtration runs are longer than equivalent sand filters.
